Angela Johnson is a graduate of Oxford in Oriental Studies. Her early years took her to Asia where she used her Japanese and Chinese languages. She then worked at DDB and Ogilvy in London running increasingly bigger client global businesses, whilst also holding roles in the leadership teams of the agencies.
She moved to the US in 2009 to run the Motorola account globally and then the Kimberly-Clark business for WPP. As WPP Team leader of the Kimberly-Clark business, she built a truly integrated team from agency disciplines covering advertising, PR, digital, data, media, social, loyalty and shopper marketing to form powerful solutions and a new agency model for the global client in 88 markets. She also launched a new technology-based content studio based on a robust ad-tech stack and performance media engine.
While in Chicago she joined the Chicago Ad Fed board and brought the D&I agenda into sharp focus. She continued this passion with her move to New York, getting involved early in the Time’s Up Advertising initiative. She mentors widely and sponsors frequently – believing the latter is hugely important for women and people of color.
As President of the New York Office, Angela grew mcgarrybowen revenue significantly in 2018, helped win the Agency’s first ever Cannes Lions, One Show and LIA awards, and took staff retention and internal survey results to an all-time high – biggest increases in scores for ‘Communication’, ‘Diversity’ and ‘Trust in the Leadership team’. She also pitched and won new business, whilst maintaining 100% client retention and improving Client Referral Rating Scores. Money and awards aside, her proudest moment was winning the accolade which speaks most to the turnaround in the agency culture, making AdAge Best Places to Work List for the first time in the agency’s history.
Currently Angela is creating, codifying and coordinating Account Management and Planning on all accounts across the 19 agencies in North America for Dentsu Aegis Network. She has created and is rolling out a new model for growth and driving integrated pursuits for the top 200 clients and multiple prospects. She is also acting as cross network Executive Sponsor for certain key accounts.
She is also living in the ‘care sandwich’, raising two kids while also overseeing the care of her elderly mother, who happens to be in another country.
She became a Citizen of the US last year and is looking forward to her first opportunity to vote.
