The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Nominations: See if Your Favorites Made the List!
Hollywood is preparing to celebrate the best in film and TV. The nominees for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were revealed by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, kicking off the unofficial start of award season. The list includes some nice surprises (Pamela Anderson, The Substance, Nobody Wants This), some non-surprises (The Bear, Hacks, Wicked) and several snubs (Saoirse Ronan, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Paul Mescal). The film Emilia Pérez earned 10 nominations including Best Motion Picture - Music or Comedy. The Bear continued its lead across TV categories with five nominations. Selena Gomez picked up noms for both film and TV (for Emilia Pérez and Only Murders in the Building) as did Kate Winslet (for Lee and The Regime), plus Sebastian Stan picked up two, both for film (The Apprentice and A Different Man).
Netflix's Opening Upfront Salvo: We're Going and Growing Content and Ad Ops
The best laid plans at Netflix to make its entrance onto the NYC Upfront Week scene last May went awry, thanks to threats of disruption by Writers Guild of America strikers. Instead of going live from the Netflix-owned Paris Theater near Central Park, the presentation opted for virtual transmission. With no striking unions to encounter this spring, the megacontent service giant was free and clear to finally make its first pitch at sponsors for its ad-supported version. What a pitch it was May 15, coming from Pier 59 Studios at Chelsea Piers, home of Law & Order and Law & Order Special Victims Unit.
Fox's Four-Course 2024 Upfront Plate
Late Monday afternoons in May have become Fox Corporation's big Upfront week showcase in recent years. That remained the case May 13, when Fox engaged an ad industry crowd over spending more Upfront dollars for its services -- entertainment fare on the Fox broadcast network, sports coverage on Fox, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 and Spanish-language Fox Deportes, the trio of Fox News Media services (Fox News Channel/Fox Business Network/Fox Weather) and multichannel bundle Tubi, playing through smart TV sets and devices. For the second consecutive year, Hammerstein Ballroom inside Manhattan Center on West 34th Street was the venue.
Fox Entertainment Announces 2023-24 Program Slate
Fox has announced its content slate for the 2023-2024 television season. The network is adding two new dramas, two new animated comedies and two new unscripted series to its lineup. Spanning scripted, reality and animation, Fox continues to increase program ownership from in-house business units Fox Entertainment Studios, Fox Alternative Entertainment, Studio Ramsay Global and Bento Box Entertainment.
Fox Produces a Virtually Immersive Upfront Presentation
Day one of Upfronts 2022 continued Monday afternoon with Fox's presentation inside the Skylight on Vesey building at Battery Park City. With attendees surrounded by wide screens on all four walls of the room, Fox largely made its case in immersive fashion with executives and talent speaking from virtual sets displayed on the screens. Some sequences were clearly pre-recorded in advance, such as Fox Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Charlie Collier (pictured above) walking around the Fox Studios lot in Hollywood.
NBC's "Annie Live" Was a Musical Marvel for All to Enjoy
The classic story of Annie, the scrappy but loveable New York City orphan, has stood the test of time, from page to stage and silver screen to television and back. In the beloved musical's past, stars such as Carol Burnett, Andrea McArdle, Kathy Bates, Audra McDonald, Victor Garber, Sarah Jessica parker, Jamie Foxx, Tim Curry and countless others have starred in the various adaptations of the story. (Yours truly even played the butler Drake at the Downtown Cabaret Theatre in Bridgeport, CT!) Some may think this Depression-era musical has been done to death, but NBC's Annie Live! – its sixth live musical production in as many years -- breathed new life into it with its star-studded cast, stunning choreography and production designs and an incredible performance at center from newcomer Celina Smith as Annie. MediaVillage was invited to attend the final dress rehearsal. Here is our review.
