As one of the most critically acclaimed and awarded comedies of the last decade bids farewell, we are pleased to have had the chance to speak with some of the cast of Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ahead of its fifth and final season. Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak and Michael Zegen play Miriam "Midge" Maisel's father, Abe; father-in-law Moishe, and ex-husband Joel, respectively. As they look back at the previous four seasons in this special edition of our Behind the Scenes in Hollywood podcast, they discuss with host Juan Ayala how they've changed as individuals in that time, how their characters have evolved and what they hope audiences take away from the show.
(Editor's note: Juan also interviewed co-stars Reid Scott and Jason Ralph about the new season of Maisel. You'll find that video here.)
"There have been so many permutations of [my] character, so many ways he's had to reinvent himself, from having a stable, secure position at Columbia University to being sidelined at Bell Labs, then flushing all of that and having a mid-life crisis," Shalhoub explains. "In a relatively short time period, he has gone through many, many versions of himself."
Pollak describes Moishe as "such a fighter and such a cockroach" in that he, at times, refuses to change. Desperately wanting his son "to come work at the garment factory and then setting him free and supporting that journey was one of the better evolutions," he says.
When thinking of what he'd want audiences to take away, Zegen says he almost hopes there is no takeaway and that viewers will come back to the show when they're done. "It's like comfort food," he muses. "It's always there, making you feel all happy and gooey inside."
"The show is like tater tots!" Pollak interjects.
"No, it's more of a full meal." Zegen replies.
"The show is jambalaya!" Shalhoub says with a hearty laugh.
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel tells the story of rising stand-up comedian Miriam Maisel, played by Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan, as she fights to break the glass ceiling in the male-dominated world of comedy in 1950s New York.
The fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will stream its first three episodes Friday, April 14th, with weekly installments for the rest of the season on Prime Video.
