It’s finally here, folks: SXSW 2019! The South by Southwest Conference & Festivals celebrates the convergence of the interactive, film and music industries through a week of events, panels, keynotes and concerts for over 80,000 people in attendance. Can’t attend and afraid of missing out? No need to worry, because I’ve got you covered! (Watch the video above to learn more. Then, keep reading.)
SXSW is known for some of the best brand activations and experiential events the world has ever seen, yet there is a huge lack of Gen Z-focused video and editorial content outside of SXSW EDU. So, during the week of March 11th, I will be on the ground in Austin, Texas for MediaVillage, covering stories and sharing exclusive content featuring official SXSW 2019 speakers and a few influencer friends. You will be able to experience SXSW 2019 from wherever you are by checking in with #AskGenZ throughout the week.
Here’s a little insight into what you can expect:
Daily Video Recaps
For three days in a row, you can expect vlog-styled video updates from #AskGenZ with complimentary text commentary. This content will be an inside look into my SXSW experience. I’ll be attending a session about How Can Government Help Creatives. This panel features the EU’s Creative Europe initiative and discusses how policymakers are increasingly recognizing the important impact creatives have on local economies. Another session I’m looking forward to this year is Influencer Marketing in 2025: The Future of Human Media, which discusses how attaining authenticity will be a top priority for brand markets -- as mentioned in a previous #AskGenZ column. I’ll be your lens into these sessions and allow you to experience them on your own through these video recaps.
Daily Text Updates
Along with daily video recaps, you can expect short-form written text updates, which might consist of speaker interviews, brand reviews or news alerts. A few text updates will also be paired with daily video recaps, so you can get a full access scoop into the Gen Z SXSW Interactive experience.
LIVE Instagram Coverage
From March 11th-13th, I will officially be taking over the @MediaVillageCom Instagram account. Each day, I will be posting from a Gen Z lens, covering my SXSW 2019 Interactive journey. Feel free to engage with me, @directedbykels, by asking questions or adding comments using the hashtag #AskGenZ.
Spotlight Stories
Another form of content you can expect is our regularly scheduled program of full-length complementary videos and articles in the form ofspotlight stories. These stories will highlight specific moments, sessions or announcements going on in Austin, TX. A key moment I plan on highlighting is the New Bosses/New Voices: Diversity in Media Ownership Panel, produced by Professor Sean Branagan of SI Newhouse School of Public Communications. Professor Branagan is the Director of the SI Newhouse Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurshipand Founder of the SXSW Student Startup Madness Competition, a nationwide tournament-style competition for college student digital media startups. Stay tuned for an exclusive insight into the Diversity in Media Ownership Panel taking place on Tuesday, March 12.
Last year, I attended the SXSW 2018 Music Conference (see image) to work alongside multiple artists and show promoters to shoot and package video content from concerts and shows all week long. I am honored to use the same skills to refocus my coverage this year towards an exclusive, Gen Z-relevant SXSW Interactive, to help immerse the MediaVillage audience in my world.
Whether you’re a brand marketer or a member of Gen Z, it’s important to stay at the forefront of research, discovery and innovation pertaining to digital media, advertising, marketing and trends. So, make sure to subscribe to our #AskGenZ alerts to be the first to learn of new SXSW-related updates, discoveries and announcements all week long.
