The Media Financial Management Association (MFM) is kicking off 2023 with a steady drumbeat of town hall webinars and meetings for various Network groups within the organization. In just January and February alone, MFM is rolling out four webinars and nine Network meetings, each designed to engage with members on the topics that are important to them.

The first town hall webinar of the year takes place on January 17 at 1 p.m. CT. Titled "Hiring Minds Want to Know: How to Create the Ad Mix for Recruitment Success," it addresses what continues to be one of the biggest challenges in the media industry: finding and hiring talent. Does recruitment advertising actually help attract the right people? If yes, what are the advertising trends and tactics media professionals should use now? The webinar will be moderated by Marketron's Jeff Ulrich, who will pick the brains of Erica Dreyer of NRG Media and Kristin Valentin of 24 Seven Talent.

Just one week later, on January 24 at 1 p.m. CT, "The Fine Art of Media Collections" town hall features Robin Szabo and Randy Neff of Szabo & Associates. These longtime industry veterans will provide practical advice about managing a media company's accounts receivable portfolio, which is challenging even in the best of times when dealing with multiple stakeholders.

As the economic and sales environments are expected to remain uncertain in 2023, finance professionals will need to employ different collection tools and tactics, and to partner more effectively with sales departments.

On February 15 at 1 p.m. CT MFM will lead the "Music Licensing Update for Radio and TV Broadcasters" town hall. In this presentation, Janet McHugh, from the Television Music License Committee, and Bill Velez, from the Radio Music License Committee, will offer a mix of education and information about the latest rules around music licensing and how broadcasters are impacted.

McHugh will address the TV industry, touching on what music stations are allowed to use in their broadcasts and how to avoid the pitfalls of copyright infringement and higher fees. For radio, Velez will provide an update on what radio broadcasters need to know about their licenses with four performance rights organizations: ASCAP, BMI, GMR and SESAC.

Then, on February 22 at 1 p.m. CT, two experts from Lowenstein Sandler will present "The Road Ahead: Where Is Bankruptcy Headed in 2023 and Beyond?" With an increase in Chapter 11 filings a very real possibility in the face of 2023's expected economic challenges, Bruce Nathan and Andrew Behlmann will discuss how bankruptcy filing procedures need to -- and can -- become more efficient. Prepackaged, prearranged, sale and small-business Subchapter V, Chapter 11 cases all come into play.

Meanwhile, there will be nine Network calls happening in just the first two months of 2023. They include the Television, Radio, Digital Content+, Games, Customer Finance Operations, Young Professionals, Tax Advisory and Newspaper Networks. The calls are open to all MFM and BCCA members and should be considered "must attend" by those who have joined (or are interested in joining) an MFM Network. See MFM's calendar of events for more details on how to participate.

Further into the year, MFM's largest event of 2023 is now in the planning stages: the Annual Conference, taking place May 22-24 in Los Angeles, the media capital of the world. MFM members can take advantage of early bird registration pricing in effect until January 31. The association is supplementing the agenda with new speakers each week to round out what promises to be t the most far-reaching, valuable annual conference MFM has ever presented.
