Kelly Ripa was as stunned as the rest of us when she learned in April that ABC had made plans to move her established co-host Michael Strahan over to Good Morning America and leave her once again searching for a new on-camera partner on her syndicated daytime talk show, now known as Live with Kelly. But the end result from that hot mess has been as unexpected as Strahan’s dash to GMA: Having different co-hosts throughout the week has given Live a sparkling spontaneity it had never had before, not even in its first incarnation as a talk show with Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford. But now, Live is as fresh and funny as Gifford’s current TV home, the fourth hour of the Today show, which she hosts with the luminous Hoda Kotb.
