In this edition of Multicultural TV Talk, Chief Investigative Correspondent of Inside Edition and now author Lisa Guerrero talks with me about her new memoir Warrior: The Path to Being Brave, a tell-all about her most challenging moments and how she overcame them. Guerrero, an award-winning journalist, makes clear that she is nowhere near the end of her career, the usual point in time for memoirs to be written. But she says that this was the perfect time for Warrior to come out.
"We're having important discussions in our country right now, post-#MeToo, post-#TimesUp, about misogyny, toxic work environments, mental health in sports [and more]," she explains. "I knew that my story, which was partially in the world of sportscasting, and then transitioning into media and investigative journalism, was a timely one. The timing is perfect because we're starting to have those conversations in our culture and they're really important to have."
Reflecting on her varied career, Guerrero offers insights on the biggest changes she's noticed within the industry. "It's not enough to read someone's story or watch a film or TV show and then go home and continue your life as you always have," she asserts. "The idea of storytelling is to share stories [with] other people that change their perspective moving forward." For a book to be truly successful, she adds, "There has to be somebody who reads [it] and then jumps into action because they've read someone's story that has affected them."
