Hulu's "Future Man" Is a Mad Mix of Dirty Jokes and Legit Sci-Fi

Basically Josh Hutcherson The Hunger Games is Josh amp8220My last name is impossibly convenientamp8221 Futterman a janitor who lives with his parents and loves video games amp160This one game in particular Biotic Wars is his favorite because itamp8217s got a reputation for being unbeatable amp160Of course Josh eventually beats it and faster than you can say amp8220clichamp233amp8221 a pair of battlegrizzled time travelers from the future appear in his room amp160As it turns out Josh Futterman now referred to as amp8220Future Manamp8221 is amp8220The Savioramp8221 and his seemingly friendly employer is actually the culprit responsible for the eventual dystopian future from which his new friends hailThatamp8217s all great but time travel scifi warriors and worldending scenarios are nothing new amp160The reason this series is 13 episodes of laughoutloud bingeability is simple It leans into itself amp160HardEliza Coupe Happy Endings and Derek Wilson Preacher were perfectly cast as foulmouthed futuristic badasses Tiger and Wolf respectively and when the situational humor surrounding Josh isnamp8217t stealing the show they steal it back and forth from each other amp160The future world that Tiger and Wolf come from differs so greatly from ours that their logic is simplistic and survivalbased they both have huge knowledge gaps as far as what present day Earth wasis like and their social skills are pretty much nonexistent amp160But rather than dance around the ridiculousness of the amp821680s scifi action movie plot that is their lives Tiger and Wolf both embrace the madness and behave the way two people with their specific backstory would genuinely behave amp160Coupe and Wilson are so crass yet so convincing that even though I recognized them from two other extremely different shows I never once thought of them in those roles amp160To me they are Tiger and WolfOn the other hand Josh acts as more of a surrogate for the audienceamp160 He seems to say the things that viewers might be thinking at times and is often the vehicle through which the writers call out their own jokes or specifically name the pop culture references in whatever scene theyamp8217re in amp160For example when Tiger and Wolf first arrive they mention that their time machine only had a finite amount of fuel and would therefore only provide a certain number of amp8220leapsamp8221 amp160Immediately Josh calls the duo out on the Quantum Leapness of it allAdditionally Tiger and Wolf donamp8217t know very much about amp8220Time Travel 101amp8221 leaving it to Josh to have to fill them in on the rules before they ruin something major amp160These rules are things that Josh picked up from all the same iconic movies and TV shows the rest of us love and include things like Donamp8217t leave future tech in the past blend in donamp8217t kill anybody and most importantly donamp8217t amp8220Back to the Futureamp8221 yourself which Josh almost doesThere are almost too many good things to say about Future Man amp160I could talk about how the cast is full of awesome people like Ed Begley Jr Pineapple Express Keith David Community Haley Joel Osment The Sixth Sense standup comedian Ron Funches Paul Scheer The League RapperActor Awkwafina Neighbors 2 Britt Lower Man Seeking Woman and the late Glenne Headly who is simply amazing as Joshamp8217s mother Dianeamp160 Sadly she passed away in JuneI also could talk about when Josh and Wolf accidentally switched penises during a time jump or about how this show inadvertently made me revisit the music of amp821680s chart topper Cory Hart amp160If I even began talking about the uberhilarious James Cameron episode weamp8217d be here all day but the truth is none of that stuff mattered at all until I looked past FMamp8217s metaphorical book cover and gave the show a chanceTruth be told I didnamp8217t think there was any reason for this show to be good at first On the surface itamp8217s just another futuristic scifi show featuring iffy convenient time travel rules cornily named clichamp233s for supporting characters and a hero whose last name is so onthenose itamp8217s almost painful amp160The special effects and stunt work alone are worth the binge and the added layers of featureworthy hilarity and legitimate character development only serve to improve what is already a surprisingly sterling productionFuture Man is fastpaced actionpacked and filled to the brim with the dirtiest of jokes amp160In other words itamp8217s fkinamp8217 dopeClick the social buttons above or below to share this content with your friends and colleaguesThe opinions and points of view expressed in this content are exclusively the views of the author andor subjects and do not necessarily represent the views of MediaVillagecomMyersBizNet Inc management or associated writers
