Brett Dalton on His Latest Hallmark Channel Movie, "Just My Type"

amp8220I was doing Marvelamp8217s Agents of SHIELD which was a remarkable experience and playing a villain who was still likableamp8221 Dalton pictured at top explained when MediaVillage recently spoke with him amp160amp8220For people to connect with the character you canamp8217t just twirl your mustache the entire time amp160I was looking for something different and Cooking with Love came along amp160The script had two people coming together who you wouldnamp8217t necessarily think were meant to be with each otheramp160 I found their paths so interesting amp160Thatamp8217s why I got involvedamp160 Itamp8217s pretty hard not to fall in love with the Hallmark family because they take such good care of everyone and make you feel super welcomeamp8220Iamp8217ve been shooting one of these movies per year and this is the one Iamp8217m most excited about and probably the proudest ofamp8221 he continued amp160amp8220There were a couple of things I enjoyed about it amp160The characters were fleshed out and had a lot of depth amp160I also got to keep my facial hair which was cool amp160Stubble is nice because Iamp8217m really not a particular fan of shaving in real life so that was a huge plusamp8221In Just My Type Dalton stars as Martin Clayborne a JD Salingertype reclusive mystery writer who is done with the spotlightamp160 Along with his faithful canine companion Ernie he retreats to rural Thompson Lake where life is good until his idyllic existence is interrupted by a newcomer in town popculture writer and aspiring novelist Vanessa Sills Bethany Joy Lenz pictured below with Dalton amp160After recognizing him Vanessa is very persuasive in trying to land an interview with the elusive Clayborne one that could land her a big promotion if she can only get him to agreeamp8220Itamp8217s a great storyamp8221 Dalton said of the film amp160amp8220Theyamp8217re very different characters but both share a passion for writing amp160As jaded as my character might be about his career he sees a spark in her amp160Itamp8217s that passion that connects people amp160Martin was a lonely kid and started writing as a great source of selfexpressionamp160 For me as a kid it was art and drawing amp160That never went away and now I get the same passion from acting amp160Itamp8217s something that never goes awayamp160 amp160While you could have a bad experience careerwise the passionamp8217s still there somewhereamp8221One of the most likable things about Daltonamp8217s portrayal of curmudgeonly writer Clayborne is that while he puts up a nonchalant veneer the character never alienates the viewer amp160Itamp8217s a fine line that as an actor Dalton likes treading amp160amp8220Maybe Iamp8217ve started to specialize in these characters because I played a curmudgeonly cook in Cooking with Loveamp8221 he laughed amp160amp8220I think you have to understand that nobody wakes up wanting to be a curmudgeon it all comes from dashed hopes along the way or unmet expectations Underneath it thereamp8217s someone who cares more than your average person theyamp8217ve just been burned along the way and developed a maskamp8221For Dalton being able to provide a little escape for people as a part of Hallmarkamp8217s Spring Fling gives him great joyamp160 As we all practice social distancing heamp8217s happy to in some way bring people together amp160amp8220Iamp8217m always happy to be able to provide a distraction and some enjoymentamp8221 he shared amp160amp8220But particularly in these crazy times itamp8217s even more important amp160Iamp8217m not sure if the world will ever be the same but at least for two hours we can enjoy a world where love wins and Iamp8217d like to think it will continue to after this amp160In some ways last December when we shot this was a simpler time amp160But itamp8217s nice to know that human connection love care and generosity will get us throughamp8220I think our sense of community has in some ways gotten strongeramp8221 he added amp160amp8220Weamp8217re realizing connection is important amp160Social isolation doesnamp8217t mean you just have to sit and watch TV all day amp160Thankfully we all have technology connecting us amp160So call a loved one talk or text a friend to make sure theyamp8217re okay amp160Reminding people that you love them is whatamp8217s going to get us through something as crazy as the pandemic weamp8217re all going throughamp8221With the majority of Hollywood productions halted due to the pandemic Dalton considers himself fortunate amp160amp8220I have some voiceover campaigns and projects Iamp8217m still able to do and Iamp8217m thankful for thoseamp8221 he shared amp160amp8220There was a pause where everything seemed to shut down but now it seems itamp8217s slowly starting up againamp8221 amp160Currently he can also be seen in Apple TVamp8217s Ghostwriteramp8220If Hallmark knocks on my door around Christmas Iamp8217m not saying noamp8221 he smiled in closing amp160amp8220I canamp8217t think of a single household that doesnamp8217t have Hallmark Channel playing from Thanksgiving through Christmas so even if Iamp8217m not in one of the new movies Iamp8217m in one of the replays and theyamp8217re always enjoyableamp8221Just My Type will be telecast Saturday March 28 at 9 pm on Hallmark Channel as part of its Spring
