DK Bartley, Senior Vice President, Head of Diversity and Inclusion of Dentsu Aegis Network, interviewed Kat Gordon, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The 3% Movement, during the Consumer Electronics Show prior to her induction into the 2019 Advancing Diversity Hall of Honors, held January 9 at Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. “The 3% Movement is about the relationship between creativity and diversity," said Gordon. "So, a lot of our movements are about showcasing women and people of color that are in creative leadership and just showing how amazing their work is.”
Gordon and Bartley discussed the importance of engaging men in the movement as well. “Men still hold a disproportionate amount of power positions," Gordon asserted. "So, it's really raising the conversation and awareness around what good allyship looks like in this moment in history.” (Click here to hear Gordon’s thoughts on how The 3% Movement engages men and shares insights on how men can show up for women in their organizations.)
While The 3% Movement is perhaps best known for having led the charge for gender diversity in the creative industry, the organization tackles the issue of diversity -- of all kinds -- head-on through its 3% Conference. “Our events are what's called communication through demonstration," Gordon explained. "We usually have about 120 speakers. Half of them are people of color. Our events are outstanding, and the conversations are really nuanced.” (Learn more about The 3% Conference.)
Gordon also shared her thoughts on how to increase men’s attendance at events and how organizations can realize the upside to diversity’s impact on the bottom line. (More on that here.) “You know gender equals all of us and when everyone is operating at their fullest capacity, everyone prospers," she said. "And so, men, of course, are part of that conversation.”
