Pritchard joined Bartley prior to his induction into the 2019 Advancing Diversity Hall of Honors on January 9 during CES to discuss the breadth of -- and purpose behind -- P&G’s extensive diversity and inclusion initiatives. “In order for us to do that with our everyday household and personal care products, we need to reflect the population that we serve,” Pritchard noted. “And that is a very diverse population. We also know that when you're inclusive, better things happen.”
Not surprisingly, gender equality is especially important for P&G. “We have a very strong focus in our overall citizenship platform on both diversity and inclusion, and we even pull out gender equality as a major area because the majority of the consumers that we serve are women -- and are at least the primary purchasers,” he said. “So that program involves making sure that we have diversity reflecting the population at every level. It involves training on unconscious bias -- on inclusion. Every manager needs to go through that so we can we have the right behaviors.” (Listento Pritchard discuss P&G’s overall citizenship platform.)
P&G also pays particular attention to the roles portrayed in advertising, not just as a reflection of the brands, but of society at large. “We use our voice and advertising in order to promote the accurate and positive portrayal of women of all races, sexuality, of all abilities and disabilities, and religious and economic [backgrounds]," he explained. "That creates the inclusive environment that we wanted to have.” (Click here for Pritchard’s thoughts on why accurate representation is important.)
Pritchard and Bartley also discussed P&G’s presence at CES. “I'm trying to embed cutting-edge technology into our everyday products in order to make life better,” Pritchard said.
