A Visit From St Martin*

The year is over, it’s been put to bed.
But the following people moved on ahead.
Alexei Navalny, James Earl Jones and OJ.
Sutherland, Mays, and Rose passed away.

Newhart, Kristofferson, Jerry West passed on.
Along with civility, now they’re all gone.
So, what do we do now? Because in a flash.
I learned that my values have less value than cash.

Meanwhile Gaza and Ukraine in the snow,
Gave luster of midday as bombs fell below.
Protests in colleges, many appear.
While wars are still raging at the end of the year.

But the real story in the U S of A
Is Donald Trump, by vote he will stay.
As he gestured and shouted and called people names.
We watched and listened; he performed without shame.

Now kindness, civility, empathy, truth.
Legal behavior, don’t forget couth.
From the top of the law, the Supreme Court.
POTUS “immunity” cut the law short.

From the bench Justice Thomas on yachts out of town.
While Sam Alito flew our flag upside down.
Then Nikki Haley gave it a try.
She won votes and approval, then said goodbye.

So, in a twinkling we knew he would win.
The mantle was his, the enemy within.
I was holding my breath and was turning around,
When Joe pardoned his son, in debate lost his crown.

So, with a long tie from his neck to his toes,
He now faced Harris. Let’s see where that goes.
With a bundle of slander and bluster he’s back,
In debate now with Harris on the attack.

His eyes didn’t twinkle, hair nearly turned gray.
As she won the debate before, he walked away.
His droll big mouth was okay, not his ear.
Even his golf game was subject to fear.

Then Kelly said “No,” as he gritted his teeth.
Along with Jim Mattis and Mark Milley, the Chief.
Cabinet members, forty in all,
Said “Unfit” ‘bout their boss, by the middle of Fall.

A bit chubby was Walz, the teacher/coach elf.
While Vance forgot Hitler, in spite of himself.
With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Vance gave us to know dogs had Haitians to dread.

Will Trump tweak or destroy each government branch?
By winning more votes he could get the chance.
He promised vengeance on those he opposed.
Still Trump, Vance and Musk won more votes at the close.

More than half of our people said he’s our choice.
Now Red and Blue should lower their voice.
But someone explain how you throw values away,
For less cash per gallon and moral decay.

So, what do we do now? How do we live?
How much can we take? How much can we give?
Let’s listen more closely to one and all,
And when taking a stand, be sure to stand tall.

Gabbard and Hegseth and Kash Patel
All nominations not going well.
Then there was Gaetz and RFK.
Is there a vaccine to make them go away?

As we spring to New Year, hold on to a spark.
The Chiefs, and the Dodgers and Caitlin Clark.
All played by the rules, in the end won their fight.
Stay strong, play fair – “Happy Christmas, Good Night.”
